November 1993/Cheshvan 5754 Volume 6
As I edit this newsletter I am overcome by the feeling that we may
at last see SHALOM in our beloved land of Israel. The incredible has happened
with Israel and many of its enemies shaking hands and recognizing each others'
existence. May the year 5754 bring peace to the whole World.
The 1993 Jewish Genealogical Society's Summer Seminar was held in
Toronto in June. It was an enlightening few days with an emphasis on research
possibilities in the former Russian Empire, now that it has crumbled. The
founders of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Moscow were the keynote
speakers. This was especially interesting to me since my father's side of the
family came from Eastern Europe.
I attended a lot of classes, and I spent quite a bit of time in the
library looking up articles in the New York Times. One article that especially
caught my attention was an 1930 obituary about Edwin Langsdorf, who died of a
heart attack while on a boating excursion in the middle of the East River. He
had married in 1925 was only 28 years of age!
Another article concerned his mother's estate and the people and
places to whom she left it. The NY Times gave a full disclosure.
1993 was the year of the flood that hit the mid-west United States. Fortunately our St. Louis relatives were not close enough to the Mississippi
River to be harmed, but it was a tenuous time for everyone.
Ann Steinberg Silverman, who had two wedding celebrations within 8 months: son Neal Charles Silverman, was married in November 1992 to Janie Rachel Swart in Boston; daughter Margaret Silverman was married to Ruben Zeigler in June 1993 in Piedmont, Ca. Relatives came from the far and wide, including such places as Scarsdale, NYC, and London to wish them MAZAL TOV.
