Volume 8                                                                        December 1995/Kislev 5776

NOW...

Whenever I questioned my mother or aunt about Nusbaum relatives in Detroit they mentioned the Reinheimers. So, the last time we were in Detroit (1988), I found some Reinheimers listed in the phonebook, jotted down their numbers, and when I returned home, wrote to them.  They were the right ones.  Since then Ruth Reinheimer Rothschild has visited in Los Angeles several times and even attended the reunion we had in Las Vegas.

This May we finally returned to Detroit and met the family.  Ruth hosted 15 of us for dinner, and it turned out to be a wonderful experience for everyone, especially the first cousins.

In June we attended the Jewish Genealogical Summer Seminar in Washington.  On the way we visited with Jack Langsdorf and daughter Mary Ellen, Adelaide Rosenstock Silberstein, David & Harriet Bloom Hutzler, and the Brownstein and Rose families.

Many thanks to Roz Saffer Haas and her new husband Izzy Shever for showing us around the National sights in D.C.  We toured the U.S. Holocaust Museum.  We were very impressed by the exhibit, and by the international group of tourists visiting the Museum as well.

Most of my  research time was spent in the US Archives looking at passenger ship manifests, 1920 U.S. census reports, and Canadian border crossing cards.  The most interesting items revealed to me were:

William (Kates) Katz, son of Abraham and Leah, was married to a woman named Violet.  In 1920 they were living together with his widowed mother and sister Blanche Weinberg in East Stroudsburg, PA.

Irene Slattery Berkman and son Lawrence  were living with her brother Joseph in New York at the time of the 1920 census.  Perhaps husband Jay Berkman was traveling on business.

Ida Levistein, 65 and born in Geisa, sailed from Germany to New York on August 20, 1938, leaving her brother Karl, of Greussen,  She was probably the last member of that family to escape the Holocaust.

After the Seminar we were supposed to attend the Bar Mitzva of Raphoel Chill, and meet several other family members. However, on the way I received the sad news of my mother Ruth's sudden death from a heart attack and we returned home immediately.

This was also a year for family members to travel to Eastern Europe: Joe & Margot Kohen, Irving & Shirley Simon, Sam & Joan Rimmon.  For Sam Rimmon it was a very emotional experience--it was the first time he'd been to Warsaw since he left as a child of 9.

The visit at Auschwitz was, to quote Joe Kohen, "a most sobering visit."  I think the part that had the biggest affect on me was the room filled with hair.  The nazis were using the hair to weave blankets and clothing.  And who questioned it?

On the lighter side: do try to see "The Magic Lantern" show in Prague.  It is a feast for one's eyes and sense of humor.

The long-awaited meeting of Hannelore Militzer Noe and Joan Rimmon finally happened in August.  It was a wonderful, but brief, event.  Hannelore is a dear friend of Gisela Eckstein Zamora.  Gisela had told me about a friend who came from Geisa, suggesting that she might have information about the Levistein family.  She did have some information about Geisa that helped me, but even more exciting, we discovered we are cousins on the Rosenstock/Moses line.

Back in 1819 when Jews had to select family names, the two sons of Jehuda ben Shlomo, of Tann by Fulda, took the last names of Rosenstock and Moses.  Hannalore is descended from the Moses line, Joan from the Rosenstocks.
