Werner Neuburger published his best-selling
memoirs “The Clouds Don’t Stay Dark Forever” and has had many book signings,
interviews and has been invited to speak at various locations.
After reading Werner’s book, John Newburger discovered many family similarities – they were indeed cousins. John and his son Bruce joined the 29th annual Neuburger family reunion in August. John Newburger wrote an article Genealogy and Memoir Writing Reunites a Family Separated by the Holocaust which was published in the Cleveland Jewish News following the reunion. Only space prevents me from copying it here.
250 of her closest family, friends and
co-workers surprised Elana Rimmon Zimmerman to celebrate her Big 5-0. Held
two weeks after the actual date, and lured into thinking that the lunches
and dinners were it, she was completely stunned when she stepped out of the
car, had the blindfold removed and heard “Surprise! Happy Birthday!” She
thought she was going to see a house with a special view! Held at Rancho Los
Amigos, it was a western themed party, with a caller and all. Everyone
including all the youngsters had a great time.
A few weeks later together with the two other
founding board members, she was honored by the New Community Jewish High
School at a gala affair held at Universal City. The NCJHS graduated its
first class in June. She is now President of the Board of Directors.
Michael Sandmel, was awarded the Mary-Ella
Holst Youth Activist Award by the Unitarian-Universalist Service Committee
at the General Assembly of congregations in St. Louis on June 23. Mike, who
just completed his sophomore year in high school, is an unusually young
recipient of the award. He has been social action chair and workshop chair
of the Young Religious UU Youth in the Massachusetts Bay District over the
past two years, leading and producing seminars and anti-racism,
anti-oppression training for other high school students; he attended the
UUSC Democracy Work Camp in 2004 and registered minority voters (using his
Spanish); he participates in the Student Alliance for Justice and Economics
at the high school, which successfully campaigned for a living wage for town
employees and contractors; he is a volunteer tutor at Bikes Not Bombs (and
is now a paid mechanic in their shop). Last summer, Mike translated for his
parents when they traveled to Peru to buy trade goods in support of One
Heart Many Rhythms, a charity that supports the preservation of indigenous
peoples’ cultures by sponsorship of tipping-point projects in their
communities. The UU Service Committee dates to 1939; its initial efforts
involved assisted the escape of Jews and progressives from Nazi Germany and
occupied France; it continues to promote social justice in the US and
abroad.
Mike’s parents are active
supporters of the UUSC, following Frances Sandmel’s work with the American
Friends’ Service Committee during the 1940s and throughout her lifetime
Evan Joseph Kohen was inducted into the Eagle Scout Court of Honor in March of 2006.

The Abrams family of Ann Arbor has had a
fascinating year. Here a few of their activities:
Terry is busy teaching photo-shop at University
of Michigan, Washtenaw Community College and Maine Photographic Workshops in
Rockport Maine, and leading week-long photo trips to the likes of Death
Valley and Southern Utah. His print-making artistic business continues to
flourish as well. Check out his website at
terry@terryabrams.com.
Lisa Weston Abrams is committed to a twice/day
meditation practice, yoga, cooking vegetarian meals for her family and
friends and volunteering for various nonprofit groups including the
children's school and the meditation center (in addition to acting as
chauffeur for the children and their activities!).
Saralyn Abrams is 11 years old and in her first
year of Middle School in Ann Arbor, MI. She is on the honor roll, plays
field hockey, is learning synchronized swimming. She also plays classical
guitar and flute.
Henry is 8 years old and in 3rd grade. He
enjoys reading, math and writing. One of his short stories was published in
an Anthology of Short Stories book last Spring. He is on a traveling soccer
team and plays classical guitar too.
Marc Shiman is working now on a US Government
contract to help the Red Sea city of Aqaba, Jordan prosper. About 5 years
ago, the King of Jordan declared that this city, which borders Israel,
Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, would be Jordan's second city and a southern growth
pole.
Aqaba has always been a sleepy port town, and
is Jordan's only access to the sea. It is only a 5 minute drive to the
border crossing with Israel. Interestingly during the days of war between
Jordan and Israel, there was an understanding that neither Aqaba nor the
Israeli city of Eilat were to be targeted in attacks.
As the city has grown, so has the cooperation
between the two city governments. Remnants of the war still exist as major
developments in Aqaba have led to de-mining activities on a large scale.
Unfortunately security concerns still rule above all. Regardless, the
discussion of cooperation is remarkable for any two countries, much less two
that were very recently at war.
The two have discussed having a joint
international airport, a promenade that would allow pedestrians to walk from
one city to the other, a shared nature reserve, and a shared border
crossing. They have also discussed having shared architectural and planning
standards for the two cities. So far only the nature reserve has
materialized.
In the midst of the violence in the Middle
East, the application of true peace and partnership between Jordan and
Israel is both amazing and encouraging. Hopefully this is the future of the
Middle East.
Rob Katz, following in his father, Admiral Doug’s footsteps, has received news that he will take Command of the USS STOUT (DDG 55) home-ported in Norfolk. He will depart the Joint Staff in March with a Change of Command in October 2007.
Frankie Martuscelli finally realized that participation in sports requires participation in academics. He made honor roll once this year and did wonderfully in wrestling and throwing the shot put and discus and will play football as a freshman next year. [WTG, Frankie.]
First cousins, Nava Rimmon and Tamar Zimmerman celebrated their bat mitzvahs February 19th and December 23rd respectively. Both excelled in their presentations, Nava delivering a d’var Torah on Queen Esther and Tamar chanting perfectly the longest maftir in the entire Torah. (Her bat mitzvah fell on the second Shabbat in Hanukkah, hence a reading of unparalleled length.)

Fanny and Levi Katz had a son Elias who went from Pittsburgh and settled in Chicago in 1896. He followed his father’s business and was in the cattle business. His family was comprised of his wife Fannie Hirsch and their children: Blanche, Morris, Harry, Milton, David, Belle and Florence.
Blanche married Henry Brown. They had two children Harold and Shirley. Harold’s daughter is Margot Skinner. Shirley’s son is Robert Rosenau.
Morris married a woman named Marissa and had two children who died very young and Morris passed away in Cleveland in 1902.
Harry died suddenly in Pittsburgh in 1896 just shortly after the family left for Chicago.
Milton, Sr. married Josephine Sisson in 1900 in Chicago. She was from Rhode Island. They had four children, three of whom grew to maturity: Katherine, Milton Jr. and Everett. Sometime between 1910 and 1920 they moved to Jersey City, N. J. Milton died before 1930 and Josephine raised the children herself, and never making contact with the family that was left in Chicago.
I don’t know what happened to David. He was still living when his mother Fannie died in 1926. But I have never found anything about him.
Belle married Sylvan Schey, who had a cousin the same name and his wife was also Belle. They had two daughters, Beatrice and Evelyn. Beatrice married Edwin Mann. Their family consisted of Fredrick who died early, Edwin Jr. and Nancy. Evelyn married Alex Winefield and their children were Carol, Richard and Harry.
Florence married Reuben Metz and had two daughters, Jane and Helen. They never married.
In my research I have met Robert Rosenau, Margot Skinner and Ed Mann, Jr. and Nancy Mann. None of them had never heard of the family in New Jersey.
But I was not to be deterred.
I have a friend in the genealogy community who lives in New York and she has been extremely helpful to me in tracking down “lost” relatives. She works for a library and has access to records I couldn’t. In 2004 she helped me find Randy and Lois Lowen Arlen. Then later in the same year she helped find some of my husband’s cousins. So to keep the record going in 2005 I asked if she could locate some people who had lived in New Jersey in 1930. Their name was Katz, a very common and prolific name to research. But I knew they had a son named Milton Jr., and another named Everett, and a daughter named Katherine. Somehow Renee found a link for a tree on a web site that had a reference to Everett Katz. Not only that, he was a basketball star at Syracuse University, a member of a team that was called the “Reindeer Five.” She found the email address of the person who had entered this reference on the web site and gave it to me. I contacted him, and as they say, the rest is history. [See photo below]
Many phone calls and emails later, when the annual Jewish Genealogy Conference was held in New York City in August 2006, I decided to go to Syracuse before attending the conference. Sam and I flew into JFK, rented a car and took the beautiful drive through the Catskills up to Syracuse.
We met two of Everett and Catherine Katz’s daughters who live in Syracuse, and one daughter who lives in Rochester. They are the most wonderfully warm and friendly people. It was like we knew each other forever. And over lunch we went through their mother’s old telephone book and we found a name for whom we thought might be Ev’s “lost sister” Katherine. Later, back at the hotel I went on the Internet and looked up some old census records and did find that the name was correct.
I have since been in touch with the family descended from Katherine, and solved a huge mystery.
During the conference we had a chance to meet some of our New York City relatives: John and Connie Langsdorf and Jennifer Saltzstein came to visit us at the hotel. And Sam’s sister even flew in from Tel Aviv to spend some time with him and their cousins while I researched mine.
Jennifer & Joan

John & Connie Langsdorf, Joan & Sam Rimmon
On the Sunday following the conference we drove with Hannelore Militzer Noe out to meet Werner & Henny Neuburger and Gisela Eckstein Zamora. We all went out to lunch, and then afterwards Hanne and Sam and I drove down to visit Hanne’s daughter Michelle and her family.
Small World Department: Michelle was best friends with Carolyn Blashek in college. Carolyn is the founder of Operation Gratitude, in which I am heavily involved in sending care packages to our U.S. troops deployed around the world.
After the conference Sam and I drove down to meet another Katz cousin, from Fanny and Levi’s son David (and Zerlina Katz). Mary Lou’s mother was Karlyne and Mary Lou hadn’t met anyone from her mother’s extended family for many years; and it was a most exciting reunion. We met her sons and daughters-in-law.
And Small World Department again: one of Mary Lou’s daughters-in-law, although not Jewish, teaches computer at an Orthodox Jewish High School in New Jersey, the same school where one of Sam’s cousins teaches Hebrew.
Some years ago I was contacted by Martin Eisenman of Kansas City trying to find a connection with his Rosenstock family. We exchanged information and thought that we had it. Then, I was going over some papers I had from someone else regarding her ancestors, Abraham and Amalia Nussbaum Grunebaum. Lo and behold, it turns out that Martin’s ancestor was Amalia as well. Amalia was my great-great-grandmother Rachel’s sister. So we are related through the Nusbaums also.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bodenheimer and Mrs. Babette Weil have returned from Little Rock, where they attended the marriage of their son, Mr. Jacob H. Bodenheimer to Miss Mabel Frank. It was a most brilliant function; the home was tastefully embellished and an elaborate supper and reception followed the ceremony. More than a hundred wire messages, bearing good wishes, and a large number of choice and costly presents, testify to the popularity of the contracting parties. The young bride, a sister of Mrs. Jake Katzenstein of our city, has during several visits paid at our port, won the love of all who met her, and will receive a most hearty welcome in our midst. Mr. Bodenheimer ranks high, in every respect, among the young men of whom we are justly proud. The young couple are taking an extended trip, visiting points of interest, and on their return will make their home with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bodenheimer on Christian Street. Our most heartfelt congratulation are extended to the youthful couple, and all interested in their welfare.
